First introduced in 1820, ‘Farleigh Damson’ is a compact, heavy and reliably fruiting culinary damson that is self-fertile. The small fruits are almost black in colour, not quite sweet enough to eat raw, but make fabulous pies, jams and wines. An exceptionally hardy plant that was once used as windbreaks for more tender fruit trees in the south of England.

Garden care: When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Stone fruits like this damson should be pruned in the summer to avoid a disease called silver leaf which enters through cuts. If you prune in late summer, the sap is slowing but is still running fast enough to seal up any wounds. Check and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches.
